Getting to Work in India Dehradun, India- Dr. Tim Sproule, Interplast volunteer plastic surgeon. I had my usual difficulties getting to my destination. This time, it was an ice storm in Toronto which delayed my flight from taking off for two hours. I arrived in Newark for my connecting flight with 30 minutes to spare and a few miles of terminal to run through. Thankfully, the Continental Airline staff was great, and everything made it all the way to Delhi. I was met at the airport by Kush Aeron —a dedicated surgeon from Dehradun—who with his father has developed a great partnership with Interplast to help burn victims. Over the next day, I met up with the various members of our team—all volunteering their time and expertise to help the Doctors Aeron in their work. 'Flight'- Heritage to Modernity Nestled in the heart of New Delhi is Connaught Place (CP)... and tucked away deep in CP is 'Ugrasen ki Baoli'. The baoli/ stepwell was built in the Lodi period and unlike the bustling sorroundings, it is a calm, secluded, cool and refreshing place. The baoli is now home to a 'zillion' pigeons. Standing at the top of the steps, you have a breathtaking view- 'of the heritage that is characteristic of India and the modernity towards which we are slowly moving!' And the pigeons remind us of what we should be doing- FLYING (towards development) but ROOTED (in our rich traditions and values)!
